Introduction

This visualization breaks down JEPI’s calendar-year results from 2021 through 2025 into two components: price movement and distributions. Distributions are shown as cash income and are not reinvested, so this is not a conventional reinvested or compounded total-return chart.

Key insights

  • Distributions Were the Larger Period Contributor

Across the full 2021–2025 period, JEPI recorded an +11.1% Price Return and a +43.6% Distribution Return. Combined without reinvestment, the period Total Return was +54.7%.

  • 2022 Shows How Distributions Can Offset a Price Decline

In 2022, JEPI’s Price Return was -14%, while its Distribution Return was +9.8%. The distributions offset part of the price decline, leaving a net return of -4.2% for the year.

  • Price and Distributions Contributed Differently Across Years

The balance between the two components varied considerably. Price movement was particularly strong in 2021 at +17.8%, while in 2023 the +0.8% Price Return was small compared with the +8.7% Distribution Return. In 2024, the two components were similar at +7.2% from price and +7.6% from distributions.

Methodology

Each calendar-year bar separates the year’s return into Price Return and Distribution Return. In positive-price years, the two components visually combine above zero. When price movement is negative, Price Return extends below zero while Distribution Return remains above zero, with the net-return marker representing Price Return plus Distribution Return. Cash distributions are not reinvested. The 2021–2025 period figures are full-period values supplied by the chart data and are not calculated by adding the annual percentage bars. The period Total Return of +54.7% equals the +11.1% period Price Return plus the +43.6% period Distribution Return.
