Introduction

Big Oil may look like a single dividend category, but the seven companies in this visualization offer very different combinations of scale, current yield, and recent dividend growth. The chart compares Exxon Mobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, and Eni, grouping them by country while using market capitalization to show relative size and color to represent five-year dividend CAGR.

Key insights

  • European majors lead on current yield

BP has the highest forward dividend yield in the displayed group at 4.8%, followed by TotalEnergies at 4.7% and Eni at approximately 4.5%. By comparison, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips are both around 2.5%–2.6%.

  • Dividend growth tells a different story

Eni has the highest five-year dividend CAGR in the displayed set at 23.87%, followed by Shell at 17.23% and ConocoPhillips at 13.48%. These figures need context: the FY2020–FY2025 window begins from depressed cut-level payouts for some European majors, including Shell and Eni.

  • The biggest companies are not the highest yielders

Arc size represents market capitalization, making Exxon Mobil the largest company in the visualization at about $660.6 billion, followed by Chevron at about $414.9 billion. Their forward yields are 2.56% and 3.41%, respectively, illustrating how company scale and current dividend yield can tell different stories within the same industry.

Methodology

The sunburst groups the seven companies by country: France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Each company's arc is sized by market capitalization, so larger arcs represent larger companies rather than equal weighting. Color maps each company's five-year dividend CAGR using a sequential scale, while leaf labels show the ticker and forward dividend yield. The center summary aggregates the currently focused part of the visualization, including company count, combined market capitalization, market-cap-weighted forward yield, and market-cap-weighted five-year dividend growth. The ranked panels highlight the three highest yields and three fastest dividend growth rates within the displayed seven-company set. Clicking an arc focuses the visualization on that branch, while the center control moves back up the hierarchy. Tooltips provide market capitalization, forward yield, five-year dividend CAGR, and associated metadata. Market-cap and yield observations are dated September 7–8, 2026, so the data should not be interpreted as sharing one exact as-of date.
